In a Nielsen report "Decoding the Asian Mobile Consumer" consumer behavior revealed in nine Asia-Pacific countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, China, India and Singapore .
The report said that smartphone penetration is highest in Asia Pacific in Hong Kong and Singapore at 87 percent, followed by Malaysia ( 80 percent ), Australia ( 75 percent ) and China ( 71 percent ) .
Penetration of smartphones also gained outside of these countries, namely Thailand reached 49 percent, followed by Indonesia 23 percent, India 18 percent, 15 percent and the Philippines.
The number of consumers who have multiple mobile devices is also increasing in the region, especially in Malaysia, where nearly half ( 47 percent ) have more than one mobile device.
As for Hong Kong with 31 percent, as well as Singapore and China with 29 percent. Tablet ownership has also been significant growth in the Asia Pacific market during this year, especially in Singapore ( up 30 percentage points to 47 per cent ), Hong Kong ( up 27 points to 57 percent ), and Malaysia ( up 23 points to 47 percent ) .
" The growth in the ownership of the device connections in Asia Pacific during the past few years is shocking. Although this growth is now expected to start flattening out, the use of peripheral connections by consumers will continue to grow and expand, "said Director of Nielsen's Telecom Practice and Technology for Southeast Asia, North Asia, and the Pacific Sagar Phadke .
As functionality increases and extends smartphone, along with consumer awareness and knowledge about the functions available on their handset, the time they spent using smartphones also rose sharply .
In Southeast Asia, smartphone owners spend an average of more than three hours per day with their smartphone in June 2013 to undertake activities such as chat applications, social networking, and entertainment such as games and multimedia that encourages a lot of interaction .
"Although smartphone penetration has not reached 100 percent, the use of the application increases. Globally, one out of every five mobile users ( 1.2 billion ) using the application. In Asia Pacific alone, games, social networking, and multimedia are the most frequently used applications" said Phadke.
